It’s hard to believe that glasses are now considered a fashion item – it is a long time coming for those of us who were tormented in school for having ‘four-eyes’. Yet spectacles are now so coveted that select frames have a top price tag, and some people even wear glasses when they don’t have a prescription! So it seems that the time is finally here for wearing the accessories that are an essential part of every day for many of us; no longer do we need to stick to contact lenses just to fit in.
I’ve decided to embrace the fact that I wear glasses and I have banished my contact lenses to the drawer – only getting them out for physical activities that can be a pain when wearing frames on my face. I’ve double checked my prescription (I found free eye tests in my local supermarket) and ordered a small selection of new frames. I’m determined to pull off more than one look, just like I would do with any other accessory.

What is your personality?
The first thing to remember is that glasses provide a lot of impact when it comes to how you look. Therefore you might want to think about how this comes across to others. Of course, you don’t need to stick to one personality if you like many different things; you could think about an ‘intelligent’ look, an ‘edgy’ or ‘rock star’ look, as well as ‘hippy’ look. These are all things to keep in mind as you head to the opticians to look at frames.
What suits you?
It isn’t always easy to find the perfect pair of glasses as the shapes and sizes can vary quite drastically. However it is best to get on the right track by thinking about the shape of your face as this will help you to filter out ones that are unlikely to suit you. Here is a quick guide to help you out:
- Those with oval shaped faces are lucky enough to pull off most frames due to the proportions of their features
- People with rectangular shaped faces suit large, square frames as well as more modern styles
- Those with triangular shaped faces are often best matched
with small, rimless frames - People with a diamond shaped face can really draw attention to their eyes with dramatic oversized frames
- Those with round faces often suit narrow rectangular frames that provide more definition.

Have a look at the frame styles that celebrities are wearing, and the ones that are tipped to be big next season. You can also consider the colours that are popular on the runway; pastels are big for spring/summer 2014 so you could find a way to incorporate this into your new glasses!
